First of the Month, SF Edition
First of the Month, SF Edition
San Francisco throws a lot at you every month — and a surprising amount of it is free.
People talk about how expensive this city is, and they're not wrong. But buried inside the calendar are recurring events the city puts on month after month — block parties, free zoo days, discounted science nights — that most people either forget about or never hear about in the first place. This is my running cheat sheet for the ones I actually look forward to.
All of these are either free or heavily discounted. Most are family-friendly. None of them require you to know anyone or be "in the know." You just have to show up.
Downtown First Thursdays
Every first Thursday of the month, a stretch of 2nd Street between Market and Howard transforms into a full block party. DJs, drag performances, food trucks, live music, a karaoke stage, art pop-ups, and what they proudly call "the biggest disco ball west of the Mississippi" at the Discoteca on Jessie Street. Happy hour kicks off at 5 PM with $8 beers and $10 margaritas at the outdoor bar, and the party runs until 10. It's legitimately one of the better things this city does — over 300,000 people have shown up since it launched in 2024. Free, rain or shine. RSVP at dftsf.com.
First Thursday of every month, 5–10 PM. 2nd Street between Market and Howard, SoMa.
SF Zoo Free Day for Residents
The SF Zoo — Northern California's largest zoological park, tucked up against the Pacific Ocean near Sloat Boulevard — offers free admission for San Francisco residents most months. It usually falls on the first or second Wednesday, though dates are sometimes announced with as little as 24 hours' notice, so it pays to keep an eye on their calendar. Bring your SF ID. Over 2,000 animals representing 250-plus species, with highlights including Grizzly Gulch, Penguin Island, and the Lion House. Check sfzoo.org for the current schedule.
Approximately the first or second Wednesday each month, 10 AM–5 PM (last entry 4 PM). Sloat Boulevard and Great Highway.
California Academy of Sciences — NightLife
Every Thursday night, the Academy opens its doors for NightLife — an adults-only event where the same halls that house living rainforests, albino alligators, and a four-story dome planetarium take on a completely different atmosphere. Each week is themed around a different intersection of art and science, running from 6–10 PM with cocktails, live music, DJs, and full access to the exhibits. It's one of those "I can't believe this exists" events that SF quietly offers on the regular. Tickets at calacademy.org. They also run a heavily discounted Academy Day annually — worth keeping an eye out for.
Every Thursday, 6–10 PM. 55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park. 21 and over.
Monthly Free Museum Days
Nearly every major museum in San Francisco has a recurring free day — you just have to know which one falls when. The de Young and Legion of Honor are free every first Tuesday, and every Saturday for Bay Area residents with ID. The Asian Art Museum goes free the first Sunday. The Conservatory of Flowers is free every first Tuesday, and always free for SF residents with proof of address. The Museum of Craft and Design is free the first Thursday. Between all of these, there's rarely a week where something isn't open for free if you time it right.
Dates vary by museum. Golden Gate Park and around the city. Some require Bay Area or SF ID.
SFMOMA Free First Thursdays
SFMOMA offers free admission for Bay Area residents on the first Thursday of every month from noon to 8 PM — which lines up perfectly with a Downtown First Thursdays night if you want to double up. Tickets are released online two weeks in advance and go fast, so set a reminder. One of the best modern art collections on the West Coast, with rotating exhibits alongside permanent works like Diego Rivera's Pan American Unity mural. Limited to two adult tickets per reservation. Bay Area zip code required. Reserve at sfmoma.org.
First Thursday of every month, noon–8 PM. 151 3rd Street, SoMa.
