First of the Month, SF Edition
San Francisco throws a lot at you every month — for free.
People talk about how expensive this city is, and yeah, it is. But buried inside the calendar are these recurring gems the city puts on month after month — block parties, free zoo days, discounted science nights — that most people either forget about or just never hear about. This post is my running cheat sheet for the events I actually look forward to each month.
All of these are either free or heavily discounted. Most are family-friendly. None of them require you to know anyone or be "in the know." You just have to show up.
Downtown First Thursdays (DFT)
Free · All Ages · Rain or ShineEvery first Thursday of the month, a stretch of 2nd Street between Market and Howard transforms into a full-blown block party. We're talking DJs, drag performances, food trucks, live music, a karaoke stage, art pop-ups, and what they proudly call "the biggest disco ball west of the Mississippi" at the Discoteca on Jessie Street. The happy hour kicks off at 5 PM with $8 beers and $10 margaritas at the outdoor bar, and the party runs until 10. It's legitimately one of the better things this city does — 300,000+ people have shown up since it launched in 2024.
SF Zoo Free Day for Residents
Free for SF Residents · ~MonthlyThe SF Zoo — Northern California's largest zoological park, tucked right up against the Pacific Ocean near Sloat Blvd — offers free admission for San Francisco residents most months. It usually falls on the first or second Wednesday of the month, though the dates can be announced with as little as 24 hours' notice, so it pays to keep an eye on their calendar. Bring your SF ID. Over 2,000 animals representing 250+ species, with highlights like the Grizzly Gulch, Penguin Island, and the Lion House.
California Academy of Sciences — NightLife
21+ · Every ThursdayEvery Thursday night, the Academy opens up for NightLife — an adults-only (21+) event where the same halls that house living rainforests, albino alligators, and a four-story dome planetarium get a completely different atmosphere. Themed each week around a different intersection of art and science, the night runs from 6–10 PM with cocktails, live music, DJs, and full access to the exhibits. It's one of those "I can't believe this is a thing" events that SF quietly offers on the regular. They also do a heavily discounted "Academy Day" annually — worth keeping an eye out for.
Monthly Free Museum Days
Free · Rotating ScheduleNearly every major museum in San Francisco has a recurring free day — you just have to know which one falls when. The de Young and Legion of Honor are free every first Tuesday, and every Saturday for Bay Area residents with ID. The Asian Art Museum goes free the first Sunday. The Conservatory of Flowers is free every first Tuesday, and always free for SF residents with proof of address. The Museum of Craft and Design is free the first Thursday. Between all these, there's rarely a week where something isn't open for free if you time it right.
SFMOMA Free First Thursdays
Free for Bay Area ResidentsSFMOMA offers free admission for Bay Area residents on the first Thursday of every month from noon to 8 PM — which lines up perfectly with a DFT night if you want to double-up. Tickets are released online two weeks in advance and go fast, so set a reminder. One of the best modern art collections on the West Coast, with rotating exhibits alongside permanent gems like Diego Rivera's Pan American Unity mural. Note: limited to two adult tickets per reservation, and Bay Area zip code required.
